The oratorio "The Creation" by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn was written between 1796 and 1798. It was first performed in Vienna on March 19, 1799.
The oratorio presents and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis of the Old Testament of the Bible and in John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost". It is structured in three parts. The first concerns the creation of light, heaven and earth, sun and moon, land and water, and plants. The second concerns the creation of animals, man and woman. The final part describes Adam and Eve during their happy time in the Garden of Eden, depicting idealized love in harmony with the "new world".
